Taxation

Taxation is the primary way governments fund themselves. Income tax, corporate tax, sales tax, property tax, customs duties — these mandatory contributions finance everything from roads and schools to defense and healthcare.

The two main categories: direct taxes (paid directly to the government — income tax, corporate tax) and indirect taxes (included in the price of goods — GST/VAT, customs duties). India's GST, implemented in 2017, replaced 17 different taxes with a single unified tax system.

Benjamin Franklin famously said: "In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes." Tax-to-GDP ratios vary wildly — Denmark collects 46% of GDP as taxes, while India collects only about 17%. The US is around 27%. Higher taxes fund better public services but can discourage economic activity — finding the right balance is the eternal challenge of fiscal policy.
