Deflation

Deflation occurs when the general price level of goods and services declines over a sustained period. During deflation, companies are forced to lower prices, reducing profits and potentially causing layoffs.

The 2008 financial crisis caused deflationary pressures in many economies. Central banks combat deflation by lowering interest rates and increasing money supply.
